Curriculum Overview

At New Road Primary School we follow the 2024 - 2029 RE syllabus 'Believing and Belonging' which is the statutory RE curriculum for maintained schools in Calderdale. The curriculum recognises the importance of developing our pupils as individuals to enable them to grow up to be responsible citizens. The coverage develops their values, behaviours and knowledge and understanding of religions and beliefs.

Content taught through pathways

Learning is arranged through six broad pathways based on the Big Ideas project and the focus of the units has moved from a more traditional religious studies approach to a curriculum sequenced through these pathways.

Coverage of religions/worldviews

The syllabus no longer specifies that certain religions should be taught at specific key stages. Rather, teachers introduce and develop understanding of specific faiths incrementally so that all learners build substantive knowledge sequentially. At New Road our curriculum overview ensures that pupils are taught about all the main religious traditions during the course of their Religious Education.

Alongside the weekly RE lessons we teach our children about faiths through our carefully planned assemblies linked to religious  celebrations and events throughout the year.(See our Multifaith Calendar at the bottom of the page)

We also hold an Interfaith Week every November where children visit places of worship and we invite guests from a variety of faiths to help enrich our children's understanding of diverse faiths.
